"A couple of things set ‘Password’ apart from other games at the time. Until then, celebrities had been used primarily to make up a panel that attempted to deduce information about, or from, a contestant. The panel was totally separate from the players. For the first time, ‘Password’ paired up a celebrity with a contestant, and they worked together as a team, competing against a similar team on the opposing side. It worked like a charm.
The game itself was such a good one that I was always delighted to be invited for a return visit. I actually made an effort to watch it at home whenever I could, which was unusual for me — as a rule, my television doesn’t go on until the evening news. Even with the show on five days a week, I couldn’t catch it very often. When nighttime ‘Password’ went on the air, it helped me a lot, although CBS may not have done it solely for that reason.” -Betty White
